India has put forward 12 Forts in the 'Maratha Military Landscape' for the UNESCO World Heritage Register. The 12 Forts are illustrated in this Times of India article and full details are listed on the UNESCO website nomination which ranks the Maratha Forts alongside the following existing world heritage fortification complexes:  

  • Fortress of Suomenlinna, Finland
  • Fortifications of Vauban, France
  • Forts and Castles, Volta, Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions, Ghana
  • Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd, England
