With support from an FSG grant, the volunteers at Fort de Bron, one of the Séré de Rivières forts around Lille are building an educational replica of a de Bange 120mm cannon from the 1870s.
The group have already built one reproduction cannon and carriage, which is on display in the Fort. As this detailed article explains, their new project is to build a cutaway version of the gun as a centrepiece of a new display to explain the operation of artillery in the fort. The gun will be complemented by shells, cartridge bags and mannequins of artillerymen together with explanatory boards.
The Fortress Study Group were very pleased to support this project because it very clearly aligns with the FSG’s remit to educate the public.
The next round of FSG grants will be launched on the 1st of November 2024.
