On 15 February the recovery stage of the restoration of Lelant Battery 9.2 inch gun and its rare Mark V Mounting was completed with the recovery of the barrel in a day-long operation. The whole of the recovery is detailed in this blog from Keith Sheriff of the Gibraltar Ministry of Heritage.
The blog illustrates the huge scale of the undertaking and the volunteers of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust and the Gibraltar Ministry of Heritage are to be congratulated on their tenacity in completing the recovery. Thanks are also due to the companies who generously supported them including the scrapyard who gifted the gun and the crane hire company as described in this newspaper report.
Of course this is only the first stage of the ambition to restore and display the gun and mounting at Europa Point as described in this newspaper report. FSG will continue to support this ambition to the extent we are able.
